About Playfair Display

Playfair Display, by Claus Eggers Sørensen, is a high-contrast transitional serif influenced by the late 18th century, when steel pens and improved printing allowed very thin hairlines. Its dramatic thick-thin contrast and large x-height make it look elegant at headline sizes, close to Didot and Bodoni.

Best used for

  • Editorial and magazine headlines
  • Luxury, fashion and wedding designs
  • Restaurant menus and invitations
  • Hero titles on landing pages

What to pair it with

Keep Playfair Display for large headings and pair it with a clean sans for body text, such as Inter, Montserrat or Open Sans. Its hairlines get too thin for comfortable reading at small sizes.
