How Font Finder Works

A technical deep dive into in-browser letterform extraction, geometric property calculation, and catalog distance matching.

Adaptive Contrast Binarization

The canvas binarizer inspects edge luminance across image perimeters to evaluate background polarity (dark-on-light vs. light-on-dark). Using Rec. 709 luminance weighing (0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B), pixels are dynamically separated into foreground letter ink and background.

Character Bounding & Line Projections

Horizontal and vertical pixel histograms detect line baselines, cap heights, and character bounding envelopes. Artifacts, photo noise, and decorative borders are stripped out using aspect filters.

Typographic Metric Extraction

Terminal Serifs Detects horizontal feet and brackets at baseline to identify serif typefaces.

Aspect Geometry Separates condensed (<0.50), regular (~0.62), and geometric wide (>0.68).

Stroke Contrast Ratio of vertical stem to horizontal hairline thickness.

Weight Density Translates stem thickness directly into standard CSS font weights (300–900).

Verified Google Fonts Distance Scoring

Calculated vectors are scored against pre-indexed Google Fonts metadata. The closest match is ranked with an exact confidence percentage and instant CSS blueprint generation.
